Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili steps down from his position to assume a role within the political party in preparation for the upcoming national elections later this year

Georgia’s political landscape is undergoing significant shifts as Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili announced his resignation to take on a crucial role within the ruling Georgian Dream party.

This strategic move comes in anticipation of the country’s upcoming national elections scheduled for autumn.

In a speech delivered on Monday, Garibashvili confirmed he had accepted an offer to become the chairperson of the Georgian Dream party.

His decision is motivated by the party’s objective to secure a robust victory in the parliamentary elections slated for the fall.

The Georgian Dream party has maintained a distinct stance on several geopolitical issues. Notably, it has refrained from endorsing sanctions against Russia and has chosen not to provide military support to Ukraine, aligning its position with a more neutral standpoint.

Garibashvili’s political career has seen various phases, and this is not his first tenure as prime minister.

He previously held the position from 2013 to 2015 and was reappointed in 2021. His resignation marks a pivotal moment in Georgia’s political landscape, setting the stage for a new leadership structure within the Georgian Dream party during the crucial national elections.

As Georgia navigates these political changes, the decisions made by its leaders will play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s domestic and foreign policies, influencing its geopolitical standing in the region, and determining the direction of key alliances and partnerships.
