Kazakhstan announces it will facilitate peace talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Almaty, aiming for lasting peace in the South Caucasus

Kazakhstan confirmed that negotiations between the foreign ministries of Azerbaijan and Armenia regarding the preparation of a peace agreement will take place in the city of Almaty.

Kazakhstan’s President Kasym-Jomart Tokayev announced on his social media account X that he welcomed the agreement reached between the parties to hold negotiations between the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia in preparation of a peace agreement.

Tokayev stated that negotiations, upon a proposal from the Kazakh side, will take place in Almaty, adding, “It is symbolic that this important meeting will take place in Almaty, where the historic Alma-Ata Declaration was signed in December 1991, which laid the foundations for the independent development of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and endorsed principles related to the delineation of borders between countries.”

President Tokayev further added the meeting will serve a practical implementation of the Azerbaijan-Armenia agreements and contribute to the establishment of strong and long-term peace in the South Caucasus region.

During his official visit to Armenia on April 15, Tokayev had expressed full support for the conclusion of a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan and stated that Kazakhstan is ready to undertake a goodwill mission in this regard.
