‘Never one Italian soldier to die in Macron’s name’: Deputy premier
Italy’s right-wing deputy prime minister Salvini dismisses Macron’s Ukraine troop proposal, sparking debate over allegiance
Italy’s right-wing deputy prime minister, Matteo Salvini, firmly stated that no Italian soldier would ever perish in the name of French President Emmanuel Macron.
“Never one Italian soldier to die in Macron’s name, that’s what I think,” Matteo Salvini said on X.
Salvini’s declaration follows Macron’s recent remarks to The Economist, where he suggested the possibility of Western ground troops in Ukraine in the event of a Russian advance and formal NATO intervention.
Kremlin’s voice in Europe
Responding to Macron’s stance, Sandro Gozi, a member of the European Parliament and secretary general of the European Democratic Party, criticized Salvini, suggesting he represents the Kremlin’s voice in Europe.
“The first immediate response to the French president’s words did not come from the official spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, but from the real Kremlin spokesman in Europe, Matteo Salvini,” Gozi said.
Posting a famous photo of Salvini in Red Square wearing a t-shirt with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s face on it, he added: “No strategic ambiguity: he has chosen what side to be on, that of Putin and Russia obviously.”
