‘NATO cannot be an a la carte military alliance,’ EU’s Borrell responds to Trump
NATO’s solidarity principle stands firm against Trump’s suggestion of selective defense, EU Foreign Policy Chief Borrell says
European Union Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell countered former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent comments on NATO, emphasizing the alliance’s commitment to collective defense.
Trump made some surprising remarks during a political rally in South Carolina, which raised concerns within the alliance. He had also suggested the possibility of the U.S. withholding defense from NATO allies who fail to meet spending targets.
He said, “If we don’t pay, and we’re attacked by Russia will you protect us? I said: ‘You didn’t pay? You’re delinquent?’ No, I would not protect you. In fact, I would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want. You gotta pay.”
Borrell responded, “NATO cannot be an ‘a la carte’ military alliance… depending on the humor of the president of the U.S.,” as reported by Reuters. This firm stance reflected NATO’s principle of mutual defense, irrespective of individual financial contributions.
These comments have drawn sharp criticism, with Borrell’s reaction underlining the importance of solidarity in NATO.
