Naledi Pandor bolsters security amid ICJ Israel genocide case threats
In response to threats following the Israel genocide case, South Africa Minister Pandor steps up her family’s security measures
South Africa’s International Relations Minister Naledi Pandor has increased her personal security after receiving threats following South Africa’s genocide allegation against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The threats surfacing on social media specifically mentioned Pandor’s family and children. Pandor shared these concerns during the State of the Nation Address in Cape Town while emphasizing her commitment to continuing the legal challenge against Israel.
“I spoke to (the Police) Minister (Bheki) Cele because of messages I was getting, and I felt it would be better to have extra security,” Pandor said, as reported by Times Live.
She refrained from divulging specifics but hinted at tactics often used by Israeli intelligence agencies. “The Israeli agents, intelligence agencies, (this) is how they behave. They seek to intimidate you. We must not be intimidated,” she said.
South Africa’s case at the ICJ stems from accusations of genocide by Israel against Palestinians in Gaza, following attacks by Hamas in Israel. The ICJ ordered Israel to ensure the provision of basic services and humanitarian aid to Gaza and to prevent any acts of genocide.
Lior Haiat, spokesperson for the Israeli foreign affairs ministry, countered by accusing the South African government of protecting Hamas, alleging South Africa distorted the Gaza reality. Despite these threats and diplomatic tensions, Pandor and the South African government stand firm in pursuing the case.
