Moscow accuses Fener’s Greek Orthodox Patriarch of US-linked role in Ukraine Summit
The inclusion of Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew, identified as “ecumenical,” in a summit focused on achieving peace in Ukraine held in Switzerland has drawn strong criticism from Russia.
A source within the Russian Foreign Ministry described the Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarchate as a tool of Washington.
Speaking anonymously, a Russian diplomat remarked: “Moscow does not recognize the Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarchate as an independent entity. It is seen as an agent and puppet of the United States, evident in their actions which have contributed to the schism within the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.”
The diplomat accused the Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of attempting to exploit the Ukraine conflict, stating: “Their political activities in the region before Russia’s Special Military Operation in Ukraine in 2022 were noteworthy, all part of American strategies.
Moreover, the organization seeks to expand its influence in Ukraine by leveraging the ongoing conflict.”
Patriarch Bartholomew has been vocal in his support for Ukraine since the onset of the Ukraine-Russia conflict in 2022.
