Malaysia welcomes new king Sultan Ibrahim in rotating monarchy

Sultan Ibrahim ibni Iskandar is sworn in as Malaysia’s 17th king in a ceremony at the national palace in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday

Sultan Ibrahim ibni Sultan Iskandar, 65, has officially taken on the role of Malaysia’s new king, succeeding Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, who completed his five-year term on Tuesday. 

The swearing-in ceremony for Sultan Ibrahim recognized as the 17th king or agong, took place at Istana Negara, the official residence in Kuala Lumpur. 

Sultan Ibrahim previously served as the Sultan of Johor in southern Malaysia and was elected by Malaysia’s royal family in October of the previous year.

The new king’s ascension to the throne signifies not only a ceremonial transition but also holds symbolic importance in Malaysia’s constitutional monarchy. Sultan Ibrahim, known for his role as the Sultan of Johor, brings a wealth of experience and regional influence to his new position. 

His election was a result of a carefully orchestrated process within the royal family, showcasing the adherence to the country’s historical and constitutional traditions.
