German media outlet Welt has confirmed that the suspect behind the deadly attack on a Christmas market in Magdeburg is a Saudi national born in 1974. The man remains in police custody following the incident, which left at least two dead and 63 others injured, 15 of them critically.

The confirmation of the attacker’s nationality came from security sources. Officials have stated that the suspect rented the car prior to the attack and drove approximately 400 meters through the market, located on the city’s Alter Markt.

A suspicious item was discovered in the car’s passenger seat, prompting police to investigate whether it could be an explosive device. Authorities are also working to determine if the Saudi national acted alone.

The incident has drawn comparisons to the 2016 Berlin Christmas market attack, raising concerns about security at similar events across Germany. Investigations are ongoing to uncover further details about the attacker and the motives behind the act.

The incident unfolded as the driver sped “at least 400 meters” through the crowded market, located on the city’s Alter Markt near the Elbe River. Witnesses described scenes of chaos, with rescue workers treating injured victims near festive decorations, including a large Christmas pyramid.

Sachsen-Anhalt’s Premier Reiner Haseloff called the attack “a terrible tragedy, especially during the holiday season.” Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser recently warned of heightened risks at public gatherings, emphasizing the need for security and alertness.
