Maduro announces bid for Venezuela’s presidency
The president will run for a third term in the elections scheduled for July 28
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was officially nominated by his party on Monday as their candidate for the upcoming July presidential elections. Diosdado Cabello, the vice president of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), completed the registration process.
Maduro, 61, will run for a third term in the July 28 elections. Cabello previously announced that over 4.2 million party members had selected Maduro in the party’s internal primary election.
Accepting the people’s mandate to face new challenges, Maduro expressed his commitment to defending the country’s independence, freedom, and homeland to the fullest. He emphasized his deep love for the nation, stating that he had always defended it since childhood and would continue to do so, even if it meant risking his life.
In contrast, 80-year-old Corina Yoris was named as the opposition candidate last Friday. Maduro has held office since 2013 and was reelected in 2018 in elections that drew widespread criticism from the international community for lacking both freedom and fairness.
