Macron hosts Biden: Strengthening Franco-American alliance amid global challenges
French President Emmanuel Macron is hosting U.S. President Joe Biden for a state visit on Saturday, showcasing their partnership on global security and seeking to overcome trade tensions.
Biden and Macron participated in ceremonies commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day on Thursday and met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Paris the following day, underscoring support for Ukraine’s fight against Russia’s invasion.
Despite occasional disagreements, the relationship between the U.S. and France remains strong, with both leaders emphasizing the importance of their alliance. Ukraine will be a top agenda item during Saturday’s discussions, highlighting their commitment to supporting Kyiv.
The state visit will include a welcome ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe and a military parade along the Champs-Elysees.
It will then be followed by official meetings and public statements at the Elysee Palace. Macron will host a state dinner for Biden and First Lady Jill Biden.
The visit coincides with Sunday’s European Parliament elections, in which the far right is expected to perform strongly, challenging Macron’s pro-EU movement.
While trade issues, including U.S. tariffs on Chinese products, may be raised, both leaders are focused on strengthening their partnership in areas like maritime law enforcement in the Indo-Pacific region and addressing economic and climate challenges.
