Macron expresses desire for positive agenda in Türkiye-France relations

French President Emmanuel Macron has conveyed his intention to foster a positive agenda in bilateral relations with Türkiye during a phone call with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

According to a statement from the Elysse Palace, the two leaders discussed regional issues, including developments in Syria.

Commitment to bilateral cooperation

Macron reiterated France’s continued support for Turkish families affected by the Feb. 6, 2023, earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaras.

He emphasized France’s commitment to an inclusive transition process in Syria, respecting all segments of society, while reaffirming the country’s support for Syria’s unity and sovereignty.

During the conversation, Macron stressed the importance of ongoing efforts against Daesh and expressed a willingness to advance a constructive bilateral agenda with Türkiye.

The two leaders agreed to maintain close communication on key issues.

Erdogan highlights cooperation and EU relations

In a separate statement, Türkiye’s Presidential Communications Directorate confirmed that President Erdogan and Macron discussed Türkiye-France relations as well as regional and global matters.

President Erdogan underscored the importance of strengthening dialogue between the two nations and pointed to the potential for cooperation in sectors such as defense industry partnerships.

The Turkish president also highlighted the European Union’s decision to suspend sanctions on Syria as a step in the right direction, stressing that such measures should be permanently lifted in the new period.

President Erdogan reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to supporting Syria and emphasized the need to maintain the cease-fire between Hamas and Israel while working toward a lasting resolution.
