French President Emmanuel Macron voiced strong support on Monday for the United States’ decision to allow Ukraine to deploy U.S.-supplied long-range missiles against Russian targets. Speaking on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Brazil, Macron described the policy shift as “totally good,” emphasizing its significance in light of recent developments in the ongoing conflict.

The decision, which has yet to be addressed publicly by U.S. President Joe Biden, was confirmed by a U.S. official. Washington’s approval marks a notable escalation in military support for Ukraine as it faces Russia’s invasion. Macron attributed the move to a “grave change in the conflict,” referencing North Korea’s reported deployment of troops to support Russia.

“It was a decision that was a totally good one,” Macron told reporters, adding that the situation represents “a sudden change in this war.” He criticized Russia’s actions, labeling Moscow as “the only power making an escalation in this conflict today” through its collaboration with North Korea.

The involvement of North Korean forces has introduced new dynamics to the war, which Macron referred to as occurring on “European soil.” He underlined the significance of this development, stating that it “shouldn’t be underestimated” in assessing the broader implications of the conflict.

The United States’ decision has also drawn attention to the stance of other Western allies. Long-range missile systems have become a key factor in Ukraine’s strategy, with the British-French Storm Shadow missiles already in use. However, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reaffirmed his government’s opposition to sending Taurus missiles to Ukraine, maintaining Germany’s cautious position on direct escalation.

The G20 summit, attended by leaders including Biden, provided a platform for discussions on the war’s trajectory and its global ramifications. As the conflict deepens, Macron’s comments highlight the growing international divide over military support for Ukraine and the implications of North Korea’s involvement on the side of Russia.
