U.S. President Donald Trump suggested on Thursday that lowering oil prices could bring an immediate end to the ongoing war in Ukraine, speaking remotely at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. This marked his first major speech to global leaders since returning to the White House earlier this week.

Trump stated he would ask Saudi Arabia and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to reduce oil prices, adding, “If the price came down, the Russia-Ukraine war would end immediately.”

Meanwhile, “I really would like to meet with President Putin soon and get that war ended,” said Trump, adding that the “horrible” war should stop.

Trump to Davos elites: Manufacture in US or face tariffs

In addition to his comments on oil prices and the war, Trump issued a stern warning to global business leaders, urging them to manufacture products in the U.S. or face tariffs.

Since his inauguration on Monday, Trump has hinted at imposing steep tariffs on major trading partners, including Canada, Mexico, and China, as early as February 1. He has also signed executive orders withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris Climate Accords and the World Health Organization.

“Come make your product in America, and we will give you among the lowest taxes of any nation on earth,” Trump told the forum. “But if you don’t, you will have to pay a tariff.”

Regarding U.S.-China relations, Trump noted that he anticipates a “very good relationship” with Beijing, but emphasized the need for “fairness.”
