Knife attack at Paris-Gare de Lyon station injures several
Early morning knife attack at Paris’s Gare de Lyon leaves one seriously injured, two with minor wounds; assailant in police custody
In a shocking incident early Saturday morning, several individuals were injured in a knife attack at Gare de Lyon, one of Paris’s major railway stations. The attack, which occurred around 8:00 am local time (0700 GMT), led to the arrest of a suspected assailant, as confirmed by police.
Authorities reported that the attack resulted in one person suffering serious injuries while two others sustained minor wounds. The motive of the attacker, who is currently in custody, remains uncertain at this time.
The detained man who carried out the stabbing spree was identified as a Malian national and was found to have an Italian driver’s license, listing his date of birth as January 1, 1992. Notably, the suspect did not cry out any religious slogans during the attack.
Passers-by played a crucial role in the incident, having overpowered the man before railway police arrived on scene. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin expressed his gratitude to these civilians on X (formerly Twitter), commending them for their brave intervention in subduing the assailant.
Following the incident, the Paris prosecutor’s office launched an inquiry, while the national anti-terrorist prosecutor is currently observing the proceedings.
This assault has raised particular concern as it occurred less than six months before Paris is set to host the 2024 Olympics, with an expected 15 million visitors. Gare de Lyon, handling more than 100 million passengers annually, is France’s third busiest railway hub.
In the aftermath of the attack, certain areas between halls one and three of the station were temporarily inaccessible, according to rail operator SNCF, who also reported delays in service to the Paris region, referring to the incident as ‘an act of criminal intent.’
