Knife attack at Chinese vocational school leaves eight dead, 17 injured
A knife attack at a vocational school in Jiangsu province on Saturday evening claimed the lives of eight people and left 17 others injured, according to local police.
The violence unfolded at the Wuxi Vocational Institute of Arts and Technology in Yixing, a city in eastern China. Authorities identified the suspect as a 21-year-old man, Xu, who has been detained.
Police reports indicate Xu was driven by frustration over failing exams and being unable to graduate with a diploma from the institute. Additionally, Xu was reportedly dissatisfied with his internship compensation.
The tragedy marks the latest in a series of knife attacks in China this year. In September, a 44-year-old man allegedly stabbed a 10-year-old Japanese student in Shenzhen, and in June, four U.S. college instructors and a local tourist were injured in a knife attack in northeastern China.
Authorities have not disclosed further details about the victims or Xu’s detainment. An investigation is ongoing.
China has witnessed an increase in violent attacks in recent years, often attributed to personal grievances.
