Japan to continue funding to UNRWA
Japan responds to the worsening crisis in Palestine by reinstating $35 million in funding to UNRWA, while New Zealand announces $6 million in humanitarian assistance for those affected by conflicts in Gaza and Sudan
Japan’s Foreign Minister, Yoko Kamikawa, announced the resumption of funding for the U.N. agency for refugees in Palestine, UNRWA.
Kamikawa stated that $35 million of the initially planned funding will be released, emphasizing Japan’s responsibility to respond to the worsening humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territory of Gaza.
Earlier this year, Japan, the U.S., and the U.K. suspended UNRWA funding following Tel Aviv’s allegations.
However, several countries, including Australia, Canada, Sweden, and Iceland, have since resumed funding for the agency.
In addition to the resumed funding, Japan pledged additional emergency aid of $32 million for Palestinians, provided through various international organizations, including the U.N. World Food Program, WHO, and UNICEF.
Meanwhile, New Zealand announced $6 million in humanitarian assistance for those affected by conflicts in Gaza and Sudan.
On his first visit to Cairo, Foreign Minister Winston Peters affirmed New Zealand’s support for Egypt, the Arab League, and the international community’s call for an immediate cease-fire, as demanded by a recent UNSC resolution.
