Israel’s PM Netanyahu approves military action in Rafah
Israel’s Prime Minister orders a military operation in Rafah, Southern Gaza, intensifying the humanitarian situation for Palestinians
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sanctioned a military operation in Rafah, Southern Gaza, as announced by his office on Friday.
Netanyahu’s office stated, “Prime Minister Netanyahu approved the plans for action in Rafah. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) is getting ready for the operational side and for the evacuation of the population.”
This operation will target Rafah, a densely populated area in southern Gaza, home to about 1.4 million people, many repeatedly displaced from other parts of Gaza.
In addition to the military plans, the statement from the Prime Minister’s office highlighted the ongoing hostage situation with Hamas. It said, “Regarding the abductees, Hamas’ demands are still unfounded. An Israeli delegation will leave for Doha after the political and security cabinet will discuss Israel’s position.”
The Israeli government’s decision to proceed with the operation comes amidst international concerns. The U.S. and Egypt, among other nations, have advised against entering Rafah, where many displaced Palestinians are taking shelter.
In a related development, IDF spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari told reporters, “Israel intends to move displaced Palestinians from Rafah to ‘humanitarian enclaves’ in Gaza before any IDF assault on the last remaining area in Gaza the military has not yet reached.”
He added, “The IDF does intend to invade Rafah,” emphasizing the perceived necessity of the operation.
