Israeli PM dismisses claims about famine in Gaza, dismisses UK, Germany’s warning
German FM Baerbock urges prudent restraint after Iran’s unprecedented attack but Netanyahu defends Israel’s humanitarian actions in Gaza and affirms its autonomy in national security decisions
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Wednesday strongly rejected international claims of an impending famine in Gaza.
He spoke during discussions with British and German foreign ministers in Jerusalem, emphasizing that Israel goes “above and beyond” its humanitarian duties.
“The claims by international organizations about famine in Gaza are rejected,” Netanyahu stated, directly countering alarms raised by the U.N. and various aid agencies.
On the same day, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock advocated for caution in response to recent aggressive actions from Iran.
During her visit to Israel, just days after Iran’s unprecedented missile and drone assault, Baerbock stressed the importance of maintaining stability in the region.
“The region must not slide into a situation whose outcome is completely unpredictable,” she told the report.
“Everyone must now act prudently and responsibly. I am not talking about giving in; I am talking about prudent restraint,” she explained, stressing the critical need for controlled reactions to avoid unpredictable outcomes.
However, Netanyahu asserted Israel’s unwavering right to self-defense in his talks with Britain’s David Cameron and Germany’s Baerbock following the Iranian attack. “We will reserve the right to protect itself,” Netanyahu declared, signaling a firm stance on national security.
Upon meeting the two visiting diplomats, Netanyahu addressed the cabinet and gave details about the preceding conversations.
The Prime Minister said that he had been given “all kinds of suggestions and advice” by the country’s allies.
Nonetheless, he has remained resolute about Israel’s autonomy in strategic decisions.
According to a statement issued by his office, Netanyahu concluded: “I would like to clarify: we will make our decisions ourselves.”
