Israel issues notices to 200 Palestinians to ‘demolish’ their homes
Israel has sent a warning letter to 200 Palestinians in occupied East Jerusalem’s Old City to ‘demolish their homes or parts of them’
Israeli authorities have sent demolition notices to 200 Palestinian families living in East Jerusalem in the vicinity of Al-Aqsa Mosque, according to Palestine’s official news agency WAFA.
It was stated that the notification sent to the Palestinians included information that certain houses would be completely demolished while others would undergo partial demolition. Varying deadlines were provided for the demolition of the houses.
With this, it was stressed that the Palestinians were requested to demolish their houses themselves and that failure to do so would result in the Israeli authorities carrying out the demolitions and imposing substantial fines.
In occupied East Jerusalem, where Israeli authorities impose stringent restrictions on Palestinians regarding building permits and reject the majority of applications, there are threats to demolish thousands of Palestinian-owned houses.
Palestinian sources state that more than 5,000 houses belonging to Palestinians in East Jerusalem have been demolished by Israeli forces since 1967.
Emphasizing that Israeli municipality’s actions have no legal basis, Palestinians perceive them as “part of Israel’s policies of intimidation and Judaisation of the city.”
In most instances, the Israeli municipality also collects the costs associated with demolitions directly from the affected Palestinian households.
