Leo Varadkar, the leader of Ireland’s Fine Gael party, announced on Wednesday his resignation from the position of prime minister ahead of the country’s forthcoming general election, as reported by the Irish media.

Varadkar stated, according to the Irish Times, “My decision to step down is a combination of personal and political considerations.”

“After serving for seven years, I no longer believe I am the most suitable person for this role,” he added.

Varadkar emphasized the importance of knowing the “right time” to step aside, mentioning that, after reflecting deeply, he believes a new leader would have a better chance of securing the government’s reelection.

Reflecting on his time in office, Varadkar described it as “the most rewarding period of my life,” highlighting significant milestones throughout his political journey.

Initially assuming the role of premier, or taoiseach, in 2017, his term was extended until 2020, when he then transitioned to the position of deputy prime minister, or Tanaiste, until December 2022.

Returning to the role of Irish premier under a “rotating Taoiseach” arrangement, Varadkar has now chosen to step down from this influential position in Irish politics.
