Irish people gather outside the Irish Embassy in Dublin to commemorate the 76th anniversary of the Nakba, calling for a cease-fire in Gaza

Dozens of people participated in a demonstration in front of the Israeli Embassy in Dublin to show support for Palestine, commemorating the 76th anniversary of the Nakba, Arabic for great catastrophe.

The protesters carried banners with messages such as “The children of Rafah need protection” and “76 years of illegal occupation and land grabbing,” along with a key symbolizing the homes Palestinians lost during the Nakba.

Some protesters laid down on the ground to draw attention to the civilians, particularly infants, who have lost their lives in Gaza. Since Oct. 7, approximately 35,000 civilians, predominantly women and children, have been killed in Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip.

What is Nakba?

May 15 commemorates the 76th anniversary of the Nakba, which commenced on this day in 1948. This tragic event marked the devastation of Palestinian society and homeland, resulting in the enduring displacement of the majority of Palestinian Arabs.

While May 14 marks the establishment of the State of Israel, May 15 serves as a day of mourning and contemplation for Palestinians, underscoring an ongoing catastrophe that has endured for 76 years.
