Internet blackout in Pakistan ahead of Imran Khan rally, activists urge Starlink support
Pakistan‘s Ministry of Interior announced on Saturday that mobile data and internet services will remain suspended in areas with heightened security risks during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest.
The protests will be organized in support of Pakistan’s former prime minister, Imran Khan, who has been in prison since May 2023. Although jailed for a long time, he continues to dominate Pakistan’s domestic politics.
A spokesperson clarified that the shutdown will be confined to high-risk zones, ensuring regular internet and mobile services elsewhere in the country.
However, activists claim that internet blackouts are countrywide and affect the country’s majority.
Protesters demand Imran Khan’s release
This statement followed earlier reports of a potential nationwide internet blackout after midnight, ahead of PTI’s planned protest.
Sources hinted at possible disruptions to Wi-Fi services, while mobile calling services would stay operational and be restricted only if necessary for security reasons.
The PTI decided to proceed with its protest after talks with the government, as reported by Pakistani media, reached a deadlock because the government refused to meet Khan’s demand for his release by Friday (Nov. 22).
The ministry emphasized that public safety is the top priority, with service adjustments made as required to counter security threats.
