Intercepted call sheds light on Germany’s Taurus missile dilemma
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius reveals Russian eavesdropping on high-level military conversation about Ukraine
Russian eavesdropping on a high-level military conversation about Ukraine was revealed by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius on Tuesday, underscoring the complexities of diplomatic interactions in the face of elevated tensions. Speaking while visiting Sweden, Pistorius made it clear that no political decision has been made for the deployment of Taurus cruise missiles to Kyiv.
Pistorius said during a news conference, “They always mentioned during all that phone call, there is no political decision – neither by the chancellor (Olaf Scholz) or by me to deploy Taurus to Ukraine.”
The intercepted communication has garnered international interest due to its implications for possible military tactics. Pistorius, however, made an effort to allay worries by saying that Germany’s partners had not voiced their displeasure in the wake of the incident.
“They are not upset or angry with Germany because they know that we have rules and that things like this can happen,” Pistorius said, emphasizing the awareness among allies of the difficulties involved in diplomatic relations and the potential for unintentional leaks.
Pistorius went on to say that he had swiftly reported the intercepted conversation to his superiors in Washington and London on Monday, calling it an “individual mistake.” The reaction from Germany’s partners points to a sophisticated awareness of the difficulties that come with modern diplomacy, when even private conversations may be scrutinized by the public.
