Houthis fire ballistic missile against US warship in Red Sea
The United States announced that it successfully destroyed two ballistic missiles launched by Houthis at a U.S. warship in Red Sea
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Wednesday that the Houthi group in Yemen fired a short-range ballistic missile from areas they control toward the USS Laboon destroyer warship in the Red Sea.
In their statement, CENTCOM reported that they successfully engaged and destroyed two unmanned aerial systems (UAS) launched from a Houthi-controlled area in Yemen.
The missile did not hit the vessel, and there were no reported injuries or damages.
The Houthis in Yemen have been targeting cargo ships in the Red Sea belonging to Israeli companies or involved in transporting goods to and from Israel.
They claim this is in solidarity with Gaza, which has faced Israeli attacks since Oct. 7, resulting in casualties and widespread destruction.
In retaliation for the Houthi attacks, the U.S. and United Kingdom conducted airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen starting Jan. 12. The Houthis responded by declaring U.S. and British ships as military targets.
The Red Sea is a crucial route for oil and fuel shipments, and the attacks on shipping have disrupted trade, leading to concerns about potential inflation and supply chain disruptions.
