Greek train tragedy: Families seek accountability in parliamentary inquiry
In a heartfelt plea to the Greek Parliament, victims’ families of the Tempi train tragedy call for justice and systemic reform
In the aftermath of the catastrophic train accident that took place in February 2023 at Tempi, Greece, the families of the victims are demanding justice and accountability.
Maria Karystianou, president of the association representing the victims’ families, recently addressed the Greek Parliament, emphasizing the need for justice in a crime that affected not only the 57 lives lost but also the entire Greek society. Karystianou, who lost her 20-year-old daughter Martha Psaropoulou in the tragedy, emphasized the risks passengers faced due to the negligence and deliberate actions of those responsible for train safety.
She criticized the handling of the situation by the authorities, including the lack of discussion in the Parliament regarding the lifting of ministerial immunity and the involvement of high-level political figures.
She also highlighted a range of issues, from the misuse of funds allocated for railway upgrades to the complete absence of safety systems. She pointed out the discrepancies between the amount spent on supposed improvements and the findings of experts who reported on the absence of safety measures, poorly maintained tracks, and frequent derailments.
Karystianou also addressed the dubious role of the Railway Regulatory Authority and its head, accusing them of risking lives with their certifications. She concluded by demanding the assignment of responsibilities and appropriate punishment, refusing to accept anything less.
