A Greek Air Force F-16 fighter jet crashed into the Aegean Sea near Arsura Island during training flight
A Greek Air Force F-16 fighter jet crashed into the sea during a training flight near Arsura Island (Psathoura) in the Aegean Sea.
According to Greek media, the F-16 of the 337 Squadron 110th Fighter Wing participated in the training flight with four fighter jets after taking off from the air base in Larissa.
The pilot survived by jumping from the plane with a parachute. The plane was found after a search and rescue operation and taken to the hospital.
Greece’s Defense Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos described the incident as “the result of an accident during a training mission.”
Panagiotopoulos stated that an investigation into the incident has been launched and that the pilot is in good health.
It was reported that such training flights are organized to improve pilots’ skills and maintain their operational readiness.
Arsura Island is a small, uninhabited island in the Aegean Sea. Due to disputes over sovereignty between Greece and Türkiye, it is essential as a strategic region. The Hellenic Air Force regularly conducts exercises and training flights in the Aegean Sea.
Such accidents highlight the risks of military training and operations. Pilots must rely on their ability to stay calm, make quick decisions, and focus on safety even under challenging conditions.
This incident highlights the need for military forces to maintain their personnel’s training and readiness continually.
