Germany acknowledges Türkiye’s growing role in the region and aims to enhance bilateral relations following the Feb. 23 elections, according to Nils Schmid, a senior lawmaker from Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD).

Germany seeks stronger ties with Türkiye

Schmid emphasized that Germany appreciates the constructive role Türkiye has played over the past four years, particularly regarding Greece, the Eastern Mediterranean, and the South Caucasus.

“We count on Türkiye to continue this, especially when it comes to Syria. Syria is an important neighbor to Türkiye, and Türkiye will play a crucial role in reestablishing security and stability in Syria,” he told Anadolu Agency.

Despite some political differences, Berlin and Ankara have maintained a strong working relationship and a constructive dialogue on key strategic issues, Schmid added.

Germany’s foreign policy outlook post-elections

Germany is set for early elections on Feb. 23, a crucial vote that could reshape its political landscape. Current polling suggests Scholz’s SPD is trailing behind the center-right Christian Democrats (CDU/CSU).

However, as the CDU/CSU bloc is unlikely to secure a parliamentary majority, analysts anticipate coalition negotiations, possibly involving the SPD.

Schmid noted that should the Social Democrats remain in government, they would seek closer cooperation with Türkiye, particularly on Syria.

“We should consider abolishing some of the sanctions because we need a quick recovery for Syria. The Syrian people need to see very quickly signs for economic recovery and visible reconstruction success,” he stated.

EU-Türkiye relations and future cooperation

Schmid also highlighted the need for an enhanced strategic dialogue between Türkiye and the European Union.

“The E.U.-Türkiye action plan should be implemented. I think it was a great achievement of German foreign policy to have found a consensus among European partners to engage more intensively with the Turkish government, and we should continue to do so,” he said.

He stressed that if there are sanctions impeding Syria’s economic recovery, they should be reconsidered in consultation with international allies.

He suggested that the E.U. should coordinate with the U.K. and the U.S. to ensure an aligned approach.
