Gaza’s daily death toll surpasses all 21st-century conflicts
The UK-based nongovernmental organization Oxfam reported an average daily loss of 250 lives in the Gaza strip, surpassing the average in major 21st-century conflicts
As Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip continue for the 97th day, the U.K.-based nongovernmental organization Oxfam has compared the loss of life in Gaza with other major 21st-century conflicts.
Oxfam said the daily average loss of life is 96.5 in Syria, 51.6 in Sudan, 50.8 in Iraq, and 43.9 in Ukraine, while the figure stands at 23.8 in Afghanistan and 15.8 in Yemen.
Highlighting the dire situation in Gaza, Oxfam expressed concerns about the conditions faced by Palestinians, including the imminent threats of hunger, diseases, and exposure to harsh weather compounded by Israeli bombardments. According to Oxfam’s report, only 10% of the required food for the Gaza Strip is currently able to reach the region.
To date, 23,469 people have been killed and 59,604 injured in Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7.
It has been reported that the number of people trapped under rubble or missing since Oct. 7 has reached approximately 7,000.
What happened in Gaza?
Thousands of Palestinians, mostly children and women, were killed, and thousands were injured in various ways in the intense and violent attacks that Israel has been carrying out on the northern, central, and southern regions of the Gaza Strip for 97 days.
The aerial bombardments, which continued simultaneously with the land invasion launched by the Israeli army on Oct. 27, 2023, intensified in the central province of the Gaza Strip, the city of Khan Younis in the south, and some regions in the north.
The Israeli army, which was shocked by a resistance that military experts described as “tough” in Gaza, lost many soldiers as a result of the struggle put forward by the armed wings of the Hamas and Islamic movements and encountered great obstacles in its advance into the city.
While Israel’s ongoing attacks have caused unprecedented destruction in Gaza, the Government Media Office in Gaza has documented that 29,000 houses have been partially damaged and 69,000 have been completely destroyed or become uninhabitable so far.
According to the data of the media office, 121 ambulances were directly targeted in the attacks, and 30 hospitals, 53 health centers, and 150 health institutions were rendered out of service.
While the Israeli attacks have been going on for three months, the issue of infectious diseases spreading in shelter centers, as well as diseases related to malnutrition, is frequently included in the statements of local and international health organizations.
International reports on this humanitarian disaster emphasize that people in the Gaza Strip, especially children and pregnant women, are at risk of dying due to hunger and thirst.
