Large fire in Nairobi, Kenya, caused by a gas explosion, injures nearly 300 people

The Kenyan Red Cross reported that a large fire started by a gas explosion on Thursday night in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, injured almost 300 people.

The Kenya Red Cross tweeted on Friday, “The coordinated efforts of multiple response units have led to the effective evacuation of 271 individuals to various health facilities in Nairobi,” and added that an additional 27 people were treated on the spot. The fire broke out Thursday night in the Embakasi neighborhood southeast of the capital, government spokesman Isaac Maigua Mwaura said on X.

He explained, “One lorry (truck) of an unknown registration number that was loaded with gas exploded, igniting a huge ball of fire that spread widely.” The resulting inferno damaged numerous vehicles, commercial properties, and residential houses, with many residents still inside during the late-night incident.
