G-7 forms water coalition to prevent water crises, French minister says
At the G-7 summit in Italy, Bechu, the French minister of ecological transition, announced the formation of a water coalition to address water crises
France’s Ecological Transition Minister Christophe Bechu announced the formation of a G-7 water coalition during ongoing talks in Turin, Italy. This initiative comes in response to the growing threat posed by climate change to global water resources.
“It’s the first time there’s a coalition dedicated to working on it in the G-7 format,” he said.
The coalition will be responsible for finding resolutions in various fields, such as pollution, sanitation, and food, as well as handling crises like floods and droughts. Additionally, it is expected to enhance political attention to the broader water crisis.
According to U.N. data, approximately 85% of the world’s wetlands have been destroyed in the last 300 years. Additionally, the World Resources Institute, based in the United States, reports that around 4 billion people worldwide already experience water scarcity for at least one month per year.
Experts recommend that governments prioritize funding for the preservation and rehabilitation of freshwater ecosystems. This includes ensuring access to clean water for urban populations, implementing measures to protect against flooding, and enhancing the resilience of food production to cope with challenges like rising sea levels, floods, and droughts.
