Frontex director backs Bulgaria’s Schengen membership
Frontex Director Hans Leijtens supports Bulgaria’s inclusion in the Schengen Area
Hans Leijtens, director of the European Union’s border protection agency Frontex, supported Thursday Bulgaria’s full participation in the Schengen Area.
Frontex chief Fabien Leijtens, during his visit to the Kapitan Andreevo Customs Gate bordering Türkiye, expressed strong support for Bulgaria’s full participation in the Schengen Area.
“Bulgaria is a significant partner for us. Without the help of Bulgaria, we cannot protect the external borders of the European Union. It is essential not only for the EU as a whole,” he said.
Announcing a tripling of Frontex personnel deployed to the Bulgaria-Türkiye border, Leijtens stated that around 600 agency staff will be present there by March, significantly bolstering the Bulgarian Border Police’s security efforts.
Hans Leijtens emphasized the importance of the ongoing dialogue with Türkiye regarding the security of EU borders.
