Former Iranian Parliament Speaker Larijani announces Presidential run

Following the tragic death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash, the upcoming presidential elections on June 28 have garnered significant attention. In the wake of Raisi’s death, former Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani announced his candidacy, having previously hinted at his intentions on social media.

This announcement has sparked widespread discussion across the country.

First to join the fray was Tabriz MP Pezeshkiyan, whose earlier candidacy application had been vetoed. He announced his decision to run in the election. Soon after, conservative politician Saeed Jalili also declared his candidacy.

Additionally, former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad indicated his intention to re-enter the political arena.

On the other hand, Larijani hinted on social media that he might run for the presidency, writing, “We cannot reach the goal without you.”

While Larijani’s post was ridiculed on social media, Iranian users commented that he was merely looking for a taxi to the Interior Ministry to submit his candidacy application.

Some users also suggested that Larijani’s tweet was an attempt to gain approval from Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Ali Larijani, a former Speaker of Parliament, is known as one of the most significant figures of the conservative wing. His older brother, Sadeeq Larijani, is a former head of the Judiciary.

The Larijani family has been allegedly implicated in corruption investigations involving former President Ahmadinejad’s inner circle.
