Former Dutch Prime Minister Dries van Agt died “hand in hand” together with his wife after they both decided to end their lives by euthanasia, according to media reports.

They both were reported to be in fragile health before they died at the age of 93.

The human rights organization, that the late Dutch lawmaker founded, broke the news to the public. The organization also shared details about the last riots of the couple that died on Monday, saying that the former Dutch premier along with his wife will be buried in a private ceremony in the eastern city of Nijmegen.

“He died hand in hand with his beloved wife Eugenie van Agt-Krekelberg, the support and anchor with whom he was together for more than 70 years and whom he always continued to refer to as ‘my girl,’” Associated Press (AP) reported, citing the human rights organization.

The Democrat prime minister of the Netherlands who ran the office from 1977 until 1982, endured a brain hemorrhage while giving a speech at an event for Palestinians in 2019 and never fully recovered after that.
