Former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, a pivotal figure in shaping Canada’s political identity, dies at the age of 84

Former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, a key architect of Canada’s political landscape, passed away at 84 on Thursday.

Mulroney, who held office from 1984 to 1993, was known for his significant contributions, particularly in fostering economic ties with the U.S.

Mulroney’s legacy is deeply intertwined with the historic Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, which he negotiated with American counterparts.

Initially controversial, the agreement has since been recognized for its economic benefits and is celebrated as a cornerstone of North American trade relations.

A towering figure in Canadian politics, Mulroney led the Progressive Conservative Party for a decade, securing a historic victory in 1984 with the most immense majority in Canadian history 211 of 282 seats.

This triumph marked Canada’s first Conservative majority government in 26 years. Despite this early success, his approval ratings plummeted during his tenure, culminating in the lowest rating in Canadian history upon his departure.
