Former advisor to New York Governor accused of acting on behalf of China
The U.S. Department of Justice announced today that Linda Sun, a former advisor to New York Governor Kathy Hochul, has been accused of acting as an agent for the Chinese government.
In a written statement, the Department of Justice alleged that Sun worked on behalf of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). According to the indictment, Sun is accused of engaging in political activities at the behest of these entities, including “blocking access for representatives of the Taiwanese government to senior officials in the state of New York” and “covertly supporting the Chinese government’s agenda.”
Additionally, the indictment claims that during her tenure in the governor’s office, Sun attempted to facilitate the travel of an unnamed high-ranking New York politician to China and arranged meetings between New York government officials and official delegations from China.
The Department of Justice’s statement also revealed that Sun’s husband, Chris Hu, will face charges of conspiracy, money laundering, bank fraud, and misuse of identity information.
Sun and Hu were both taken into custody by the FBI this morning at their home in Long Island.
Avi Small, press secretary for Governor Hochul, told CNN, “This individual was hired over a decade ago. After discovering evidence of misconduct, we terminated her employment in March 2023, immediately reported her actions to law enforcement, and have cooperated with authorities throughout this process.”
