FM Fidan warns of escalating nuclear risk in Russia-Ukraine conflict

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, during an official visit to Slovenia, warned of the escalating risk of the Russia-Ukraine conflict turning into a nuclear war.
Fidan’s comments came during a joint press conference with Slovenia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Tanja Fajon.
Concerns over nuclear escalation in Russia-Ukraine conflict
Minister Fidan expressed deep concern over the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, which has now entered its third year. “The risk of this war turning into a nuclear conflict is present,” Fidan stated.
He emphasized the unpredictable nature of the war’s future risks and the significant costs already borne by those involved.
“This war has inflicted immense suffering, and it is a matter of humanity to demand its cessation. Initiating negotiations to halt this conflict is essential to prevent further harm to our region,” he added.
Fidan also called for greater international pressure, stating: “Countries like Türkiye have taken economic and political stances, but a more robust pressure mechanism is required. Just as we oppose the occupation of Ukrainian territories, we are also against the occupation of Palestinian lands by Israel.”
Criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza
Addressing the situation in Gaza, Fidan strongly criticized Israel’s military actions, accusing the country of committing genocide.
“Israel is systematically starving and depriving the people of Gaza of water. Bombing hospitals, schools, mosques, and even churches, Israel tramples on all humanitarian values,” Fidan remarked.
He also pointed out that Israel’s actions in Gaza have extended to the West Bank. “Israel has now brought the systematic atrocities seen in Gaza to the West Bank. The Netanyahu government is playing with fire,” Fidan said, warning that those who remain silent on Gaza bear a heavy responsibility.
Türkiye-Slovenia relations strengthen amid discussions on trade, culture EU membership
During his visit, Minister Fidan met with Slovenian Deputy Prime Minister Tanja Fajon. The two officials discussed the strengthening of bilateral relations, particularly in the economic, cultural and educational fields.
Fajon noted the growing trade relations between the two countries and highlighted the importance of further cooperation.
On Türkiye’s EU membership process, Fidan stated that the process continues resolutely but emphasized the need for political will within the EU to advance the matter.
