First UK-funded field hospital provides aid in Gaza
The first hospital funded by the U.K. launches in Gaza, offering vital medical aid
First field hospital in Gaza launched and funded by the U.K. began providing crucial medical aid to the region on Monday.
Led by the aid organization UK Med, which often deploys National Health Service (NHS) staff to international emergencies, the facility aims to address a wide range of medical needs, from minor illnesses to life-threatening injuries like bullet wounds.
Situated near Rafah, where a dense population of 1.5 million Palestinians seeks refuge after fleeing other parts of Gaza, the hospital’s presence is crucial in filling the health care gap.
David Wightwick, CEO of UK Med, emphasized the staggering need scale in Gaza, underscoring the severe lack of health care services.
Speaking amid the ongoing construction at the Al Mawasi site, Wightwick highlighted the challenges faced in setting up the facility, including land negotiations and border delays that necessitated the use of local timber.
Despite these obstacles, the dedicated team at UK Med is determined to overcome logistical barriers and provide essential medical care to those in need.
Already, the field hospital sees approximately 100 outpatients per day, and plans are to double this capacity soon.
This initiative demonstrates UK Med’s commitment to humanitarian efforts and underscores the urgent need for international support in addressing the healthcare crisis in Gaza.
As the hospital ramps up its operations, it serves as a beacon of hope for the Palestinian population, offering critical health care services in the face of adversity.
