A Russian military plane is suspected of having violated Finnish airspace early Monday, Finland’s Defense Ministry said.

According to the reports, on Monday morning, a Russian military aircraft allegedly violated Finnish airspace in the eastern Gulf of Finland, near Loviisa. The plane reportedly entered Finnish territory for approximately two minutes, penetrating 2.5 kilometers (1.55 miles) inside both the Finnish and NATO border.

Official response

“We take the suspected territorial violation seriously and the investigation has been started immediately,” stated Finland’s Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen.

Finland’s Ministry of Defense is leading and coordinating the investigation. The Finnish Border Guard is responsible for the preliminary investigation of the incident.

Previous incidents

The last confirmed territorial violation by Russian aircraft occurred in August 2022, involving two Russian fighter jets that entered Finnish airspace in the Gulf of Finland.
