Investigations intensify around Carlos Bolsonaro with police raids exploring unauthorized surveillance from 2019 to 2022

Carlos Bolsonaro, the son of Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro and a city councilor in Rio de Janeiro, became the focal point of a federal police raid on Monday.

This raid is part of a broader investigation into allegations of unlawful spying activities during his father’s tenure. Authorities conducted searches at various locations, including Carlos Bolsonaro’s office, as they delve deeper into the operations of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin).

The investigation focuses on accusations that Abin conducted unauthorized surveillance of citizens between 2019 and 2022. Last week, similar raids were carried out against former Abin head Alexandre Ramagem, a loyalist of the former president, who is currently a candidate for mayor of Rio de Janeiro.

Supreme Court documents unsealed last Thursday have added to the gravity of the situation. These documents allege that the intelligence agency engaged in illegal surveillance of at least three Supreme Court justices and a former speaker of the Lower House during Jair Bolsonaro’s term.
