European farmers protest genomic techniques law
Farmers gathered outside the European Parliament to protest against the genomic techniques law
On Tuesday, a group of farmers gathered outside the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, to voice their concerns and opposition to a proposed regulation on new genomic techniques (NGTs) within the European Union.
The demonstration saw the participation of two groups of farmers, highlighting their apprehensions regarding the insufficient protection provided by the proposed law against the contamination of crops with new genetically modified organisms (GMOs) derived from NGTs.
The protest focused on the potential risks of the proposed regulation, which would mainly introduce new GMOs into the agricultural landscape.
Critics argue that the proposed law falls short in safeguarding against contamination and could threaten the environment and existing farming practices.
Greenpeace, the international environmental group, has raised additional concerns, suggesting that the proposed regulation may not adequately protect farmers’ fundamental rights, such as property rights and the freedom to conduct business.
The organization contends that the legislation, as currently drafted, lacks robust measures to prevent the unintended spread of new GMOs and their potential impact on traditional farming methods.
