EU clarifies stance after official warns Musk ahead of Trump interview
European Commission has clarified that the senior official who sent a warning letter to Elon Musk ahead of his interview with former U.S. President Donald Trump on the X social media platform acted independently. The letter, which contained threats and warnings, was not sanctioned by the commission’s leadership.
EU Commission spokesperson Arianna Podesta explained that Thierry Breton, the commissioner for the Internal Market, did not coordinate the timing or content of the letter with commission head Ursula von der Leyen or other members. The letter, sent before Musk’s planned interview with Trump, urged him to exercise caution and adhere to EU digital regulations, with a warning of potential temporary measures if necessary.
In response, Musk referenced Breton in a post on X, sharing an image from a film with expletive-laden content, though he noted that he would never act in such a “crude and irresponsible” manner.
