EU comission and Spanish PM visited Mauritania to address the growing concern over migration issues

The head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez are set to address the growing concern over irregular migration to Europe during their visit to Mauritania Thursday.

The leaders are expected to pledge 200 million euros ($215 million) in aid during their meeting with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani in Nouakchott’s capital.

The number of migrants entering Spain irregularly by sea rose by nearly 300% in January, with the majority arriving in the Canary Islands.

According to Spanish officials, approximately 83% of the dinghy boats departing from Mauritania were responsible for this increase.

The discussions during the visit are expected to cover security, humanitarian aid, migration programs and economic development, aiming to address the region’s multifaceted challenges of irregular migration.
