Emergency declared in Kursk, Russia as Ukraine spearheads its largest counter-offensive
Aleksey Smirnov, Acting Governor of Russia’s Kursk Region, announced an emergency declaration in the area on Wednesday due to ongoing clashes between Russian and Ukrainian military forces.
In a statement on his Telegram channel, Smirnov provided updates on the situation following the Ukrainian army’s attack on the Kursk region yesterday.
Smirnov described the situation as “difficult” but under control, stating, “I have decided to declare an emergency in the region as of August 7 to address the aftermath of enemy forces entering the Kursk region.”
The Russian Ministry of Health reported that the number of injured from the Ukrainian attack has risen to 31.
Intense clashes have been erupting between the two armies following the Ukrainian army’s assault on Russia’s Kursk region from Tuesday.
The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that they inflicted losses on the Ukrainian units attacking the Kursk region and that counter-operations were ongoing.
The Ministry of Health also reported that 24 people, including six children, were injured in the Ukrainian assault on the region.
Acting Governor Smirnov mentioned that evacuations of civilians from settlements near the Russia-Ukraine border, which were targeted in the attacks, had begun. Hundreds of civilians were evacuated from the area in a single day.
Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with security officials regarding the situation in the Kursk region and instructed the Russian government to take necessary steps to provide support to civilians.
