Elon Musk seeks China’s approval for Tesla’s advanced systems
This move will enhance Tesla’s revenues, particularly amid growing competition from Chinese automotive companies
Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently concluded a rapid visit to Beijing where he advocated for China’s authorization for American automotive to introduce advanced driver-assistance systems.
This move will enhance Tesla’s revenues, particularly amid growing competition from Chinese automotive companies.
With this visit, Musk hopes to gain China’s approval for Tesla to roll out advanced driver assistance systems, including Full Self-Driving (FSD) software.
In Musk’s meetings with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Tesla’s development in China was praised as a successful example of U.S.-China economic cooperation.
While it is unclear whether the FSD was directly discussed, Tesla received an important endorsement from a top Chinese automobile association on data security compliance.
According to reports, Tesla has reached an agreement with Baidu to use its mapping license to collect data on China’s public roads, a crucial step in introducing FSD in the country.
Musk is seeking approval to transfer data collected in China abroad to train algorithms for autonomous driving technologies.
His visit comes amid concerns over Tesla’s growth trajectory. Shares are plunging, and the company reported its first quarterly revenue decline since 2020.
Musk aims to introduce new, cheaper models and a “robotaxi” with autonomous driving technology and plans to unveil the latter on Aug.8.
Potential approval for FSD in China is seen as a game-changer, given the country’s complex traffic conditions, which provide valuable scenarios for training autonomous driving algorithms.
If successful, the move could accelerate Tesla’s autonomous technology development globally.
Musk’s trip included meetings with Robin Zeng, the organizer of the Beijing auto show and chairman of Chinese battery giant CATL, a major battery supplier to Tesla.
Musk’s visit highlights Tesla’s efforts to overcome regulatory challenges and expand its presence in the world’s largest electric vehicle market.
