Egypt might ally with Türkiye if Israel attacks Rafah, say reports

Egypt could forge a military alliance with Türkiye in response to a potential Rafah attack, following the termination of the peace pact with Israel

If Israel continues to launch an attack on Rafah, the city in Southern Gaza crammed with over half the besieged territory’s population, Egypt declared it will break off its peace agreement with Israel.

Egypt, Türkiye, Jordan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia are preparing to take joint steps against Israel. According to reports, if Israel keeps up its attacks, Türkiye and Egypt could even decide to form a military alliance.

Following Netanyahu’s announcement that an Israeli ground attack was imminent in the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah, Egypt and Saudi Arabia have joined the growing chorus of disapproval.

Egypt warned that the Israeli Rafah offensive might cause the peace deal to be suspended.

“There is limited space and great risk in putting Rafah under further military escalation due to the growing number of Palestinians there,” Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said on Saturday during a press briefing.

For the last several weeks, tens of thousands of Palestinians have been compelled to escape from Khan Younis to Rafah, which is located near the Egyptian border, to the south.

Over half of the 2.3 million people living in Gaza currently reside in Rafah, the only area that the Israeli army ever considered a “safe zone.”

Israel has declared it will soon begin a ground invasion of Rafah, defying U.S. and U.N. warnings of an impending “catastrophe.”
