Egypt, Iran warn of escalation in Middle East amid Israeli offensive
Egyptian and Iranian foreign ministers discuss regional stability and humanitarian aid for Gaza amidst escalating tensions, highlighting the need for cooperation to prevent further conflict
During talks at the High-Level Segment of the United Nations Human Rights Council and the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian discussed the pressing regional issues.
Two leaders have raised concerns about the potential escalation of conflict in the Middle East amid Israel’s offensive on the Gaza Strip.
Shoukry emphasized Egypt’s deep worries regarding the expanding conflict, saying that it could have serious repercussions on the security and stability of several Arab nations. He highlighted the complexity of the region’s crises and their impact on regional stability.
Moreover, Shoukry expressed Egypt’s concerns over military tensions in the Red Sea, citing the threat they pose to international shipping and the interests of numerous countries, including Egypt. He stressed the need for regional cooperation to promote stability, peace, and the resolution of conflicts.
The ongoing targeting of cargo ships by Yemen’s Houthi group in the Red Sea, particularly those owned or operated by Israeli companies or involved in transport to and from Israel, was discussed.
The ministers also focused on efforts to secure a cease-fire in Gaza and facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into the Palestinian enclave. They reaffirmed their strong rejection of any attempts to displace Palestinians from their land and undermine their cause.
Egypt’s Al-Qahera News TV reported Tuesday that Egyptian air forces airdropped humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. The airdrops, which were participated by the United Arab Emirates and Jordan, included food and medical supplies for the besieged territory.
