Echoes of potential war reverberate across Europe
European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell remarks that the prospect of war in Europe is not mere speculation
In a statement released on Tuesday, European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell asserted, “The prospect of conflict in Europe is no longer a figment of imagination.”
Pointing out the shift in Europe’s security perceptions following the Russia-Ukraine War, Borrell suggested that a conflict capable of unsettling Europe could ensue, urging EU member states to take preemptive measures.
US might withdraw its protective stance
Expanding on his statement, Borrell suggested the possibility of the U.S. withdrawing its commitment to safeguarding Europe.
“The protective shield provided by the U.S., which we’ve relied on since the Cold War, may not always be available. Even within NATO, EU member states must learn to rely solely on themselves,” Borrell said.
Apprehension regarding Trump
The potential reelection of Donald Trump as president of the U.S. is causing apprehension among European nations. Trump is anticipated to push for increased NATO expenditures from European countries.
Additionally, former National Security Advisor John Bolton recently disclosed Trump’s inclination toward NATO withdrawal.
During the Trump administration, frequent disagreements arose between the EU and the U.S., prompting the EU to consider the notion of establishing a European Defense Force.
