Iran’s leader Ali Khamenei has approved a proposal involving amnesty or reduction of sentences for 2,127 prisoners.
According to Iran’s Mizan News Agency affiliated with the Judiciary, a regulation regarding the sentences of 2,127 prisoners has been enacted upon the proposal of Judiciary Chief Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejei and the approval of Khamenei.
The decision, applicable to prisoners from Revolutionary and General Courts as well as the Armed Forces Judiciary Institutions due to the Eid al-Fitr, specifies that the sentences of 29 death row inmates will be commuted to imprisonment, and 858 prisoners will be released.
Under the Iranian Constitution, Khamenei has the authority to grant amnesty to prisoners. Every year, upon the request of the Iranian Judiciary, Khamenei issues pardons for prisoners on occasions such as the anniversary of the Revolution, holidays, and other religious days.
