Donald Trump urges Israel to end Gaza war
The US presidential candidate described the Oct. 7 Hamas attack as ruthless but pointed out that Israel’s global backing is dwindling
Donald Trump, the former US president and Republican candidate in the November election in the United States, has cautioned Israel about diminishing global backing and urged a swift conclusion to its military operations in Gaza.
Expressing solidarity with Israel’s response to Hamas’s Oct. 7 assault, which resulted in over 1,000 casualties and 200 captives, Trump emphasized the importance of bringing the conflict to an end.
With over 32,000 Palestinian fatalities in Gaza since the onset of Israel’s bombardment nearly half a year ago, Trump stressed the necessity for Israel to expedite the resolution of the conflict.
In an interview with Israel Hayom, a right-wing publication, Trump underscored the urgency of concluding the military campaign, stating, “It is imperative to swiftly bring this war to a close and achieve your objectives.”
Trump’s remarks were made public subsequent to the United Nations Security Council’s endorsement of an immediate cease-fire, a resolution that passed with Washington abstaining from its veto power.
Israel has reiterated its commitment to pursuing its offensive until Hamas is dismantled and the remaining detainees are freed, with intentions to advance into the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where a significant number of Palestinians have sought refuge. This strategy has prompted apprehension within the United States.
During the interview, Trump cautioned Israel about the diminishing global support, emphasizing the need for caution due to the erosion of international backing.
Trump, who frequently emphasizes his pro-Israel stance, highlights his decision to relocate the US Embassy to Jerusalem and his administration’s involvement in facilitating the 2020 Abraham Accords, which led to the normalization of relations between Israel and Arab nations like the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, as evidence of his support for Israel. Palestinian opposition to such policies has been longstanding.
