Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated Donald Trump on his victory in the US presidential election, local media reported Thursday.

In his message, Xi told Trump that China and the US would “benefit from cooperation and lose from confrontation,” the South China Morning Post reported.

He said the two countries should properly manage their differences and find a way to get along in a new era.

Reports also said that Xi spoke to Trump on Wednesday night

Republican nominee Trump beat Democratic candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris in the race to reach 270 Electoral College votes after he notched pivotal wins in Georgia and North Carolina.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry also congratulated Trump on Wednesday.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told reporters that Beijing will “continue to handle China-US relations based on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation.”
